Legend has it that in 1727, Sergeant Major Francisco de Melo Palheta was sent to settle a land dispute between French and Dutch Guiana. He arrived intent on smuggling out the coveted coffee plants that were so closely guarded. He set his sights on the Governor's wife, Madame D'Orvilliers. His amorous exploits paid off! Upon his departure, she handed him a large bouquet and buried inside were enough coffee seeds to begin what is today a billion-dollar industry. Aren't we lucky Madame D'Orvilliers was so very clever!
