Pineapple, Green Leaves, Palm, Anise, Sage, Sugar

Discovered in 1493 by Christopher Columbus, this exotic treasure was only afforded by the very wealthy. Only the likes of King Charles II, Catherine the Great, and Louis XV could obtain such a status symbol. Charles II actually had his portrait done holding two pineapples. People in high society would rent a pineapple to place on the center of their dinner tables, only to look at and never to eat. Cost in today's currency is $8,000! It was a common practice for the elite to rent this delicacy and just carry it around as an accessory. This reverence for the pineapple is what led to it being the symbol of hospitality and generosity. By the 18th century, it became more common place as it was now being grown in "hot-houses" and imported from the Colonies. James Dole started the first commercial plantation in Hawaii in 1900, growing 75% of the world's pineapple consumption.
