The word fete is from the French word meaning holiday or festival. Fete's began as far back as the Middle Ages in the key towns such as York, London, Winchester, and Norwich. These "trading fairs" could last a full week giving the local people a chance to peddle their wares and services. Surrounding the fete would be "gathering stalls" selling sweet treats, food, and trinkets. As towns grew larger, the fete became more about having fun. A fete was an important date in any village diary and it became a gathering place for the community to meet and enjoy some relaxation. Even the workers in the grand houses were given a day off to enjoy a respite from their grueling hours. By the 19th century, the maypole dance became tradition. Aren't we lucky that the traditions of the fete began so many centuries ago and we are still enjoying them today! Cheers!
