Oatmeal, Maple, Caramel, Cream, Sugar, Tonka Bean
Indigenous peoples living in northeastern North America were the first groups known to produce maple sugar. Legend tells of a chief who threw his tomahawk into a tree. The tree began to drip sap. This sparked the idea for his wife to cook meat in the sap. Final result was a delicious syrupy meal. It is said that this chief was the first to use the word Sinzibuckwud, which means "drawn from trees." Tribes developed rituals around sugar-making, celebrating the Sugar Moon (the first full moon of spring) with a Maple Dance. The Algonquians recognized maple sap as a source of energy and nutrition.
